NINETEEN

‘ASH’

ASHTON

Damn, am I tired, and it ain’t even noon yet. This is gonna suck if we have to keep the animals sectioned off like this in Mom’s pole barn. I mean, fuck, she has the mare and foal in her three-season room with an electric heater to make sure the foal is warm enough. That room will never be the same, though Rowan and Mom laid down huge, thick plastic first then some lime before putting down the straw. When I went to check on them today, Rowan was already in there mucking it out. I mean, horses piss whenever and wherever they want. That is way worse than their shit.

Now that everyone is taken care of here, got to go and make sure all the other animals are also okay. Then need to check on the herds. Fuck, not sure I’ll make the day and not sure why because I slept really good last night. I mean, Brenna was in the house and safe. Only thing that would have made it better is if she had been in my bed, but can’t rush this shit.

“Ash, honey, come on in and grab some lunch. Also, you got to stay hydrated, Son, you’re busting your hump, sweating like a pig. Wash up and come in. We’ll wait for you before we start.”

I walk over to the spigot and turn it on. Then I rinse off my hands, arms, and face. Afterward I run my wet hands through my hair to try and calm it down. Looking down, I again wet my hands, shake them off, then run them down my T-shirt and jeans. I start to walk back to Mom’s house, wiping my hands on my jeans once again. I grab the screen door, walk into the mudroom, first take my boots off, pushing them to the side, and then go directly to the sink. I turn the water on, wet my hands, then grab the bar of soap. After scrubbing for a couple of minutes, I rinse and grab the hand towel that hangs off the hook on the wall behind the utility sink.

Walking into the kitchen, I see Rowan, Rue, Reed, and Joshua already at the table. Shit, had no idea my brothers were here.

“Hey, y’all, what’s going on?”

Reed’s head snaps up and I can tell something is going on, I can feel it in my gut.

“Bro, no one has heard from Alder yet. Mom’s really worried and I’m not far behind her. Sheriff is coming up with some men to go up and search the area. I’m gonna go with them.”

I’m watching Rue, who’s looking right at me but something is missing, and I can’t figure out what it is. Reed is also watching me but not saying a word.

“Mom, can I go with Rue to look for Alder?”

Mom turns from the stove, glancing at Rowan then Rue and back to Rowan.

“Don’t think so, Son. This isn’t for fun, it’s serious business. No, I’m not saying you won’t take it like you should, just I’d rather you stick close to the ranch and me.
